Information

History of the Museum

The museum opened in 1949 in an old wartime cafeteria. It was originally named the American Museum of Atomic Energy. Its guided tours took visitors through the peaceful uses of atomic energy. The present facility, opened in 1975, continues to provide the general public with energy information. The name of the museum was changed to the American Museum of Science and Energy (AMSE) in 1978.

Museum Hours

The museum is open daily, except Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

Mon. - Sat. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.;
Sunday 1-5 p.m.,

Admission

Starting September 1, 2005:
Admission is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children age 6 to 17 and $4.00 for seniors (65 and older). Children 5 and under ,are admitted free.
Group Rate available for 20 or more. Call (865) 576-3200 to schedule a group visit.
AMSE is an ASTC Passport Program member and a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate Program member.

Discovery Shop Hours

The Discovery Shop is open the following hours:

Monday through Saturday 10:30 - 4:45
Sunday 1:00 - 4:45

Educational Materials now available

AMSE has partnered with the Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) to make available previously out of print instructional material on nuclear energy and an excellent publication on the Manhattan Project. (More...)
