Preferred times for scout programs are Saturdays, from 10:00 A.M. until 12:30 P.M. Scheduling for all programs are on a “first come first served” basis. A minimum of 10 scouts and 2 adults are required to register for a program.

Due to the amount of time, staff, and materials required for program set-up and delivery, scout leaders are requested to call and cancel a program if the minimum number cannot be met, or if the troop cannot attend on the date selected. Scout troops may wish to work on their own after our class session, as class time alone may not be sufficient to meet the requirements of a particular merit badge program.
Program Descriptions
Cub Scouts
- SCIENCE (Belt Loop & Pin)
- Belt Loop The troops get to perform a simple science experiment using the scientific method. The day is top off with a little Q & A with one of our museum staff to meet the requirements for this belt loop.
Time: 1 hour
Webelos
- SCIENTIST Bernoulli’s principle, Pascal’s law, and Newton’s first law of motion are introduced and discussed as Webelo scouts work toward this badge. They will also discover the effects of atmospheric, air, and water pressure, discover what causes fog, and study optical illusions.
Time: 2 hours
Boy Scouts
- ATOMIC ENERGY MERIT BADGE - In this program scouts use Geiger Counters to make measurements, search for hidden radioactive sources, and use a workbook (supplied) to meet the requirements for this badge. If class time doesn’t allow completion of all requirements, scouts are directed how to complete the badge, on their own, using AMSE resources.
Time: 2.5 hours

Time: 2 hours
Junior Scouts
- SCIENCE DISCOVERY BADGE All requirements for this badge are met as the scouts study optical illusions and experiment with surface tension, PH (acids and bases), and chemical changes.
Time: 2 hours.
- NUCLEAR ENERGY BADGE (“Our Own Council’s” Badge) - The Nuclear Energy Badge is a special badge earned under “Our Own Council’s” badge. It is a program that AMSE has specially designed for the Girl Scouts based on the unique history of the area and the resources available through AMSE. The program teaches the basics of nuclear energy, radiation, atoms, and nuclear reactors, using a hands-on approach. Scouts use Geiger sources, and collect data. Badges are available in the AMSE Discovery Shop.
Time: 2 hours.
